SUMMARY:UW-PHYSICS-QIS: Matthew Hastings
DESCRIPTION:\nFloquet Codes\nFuture quantum computers will require some form of error correction to deal with imperfect hardware.  Traditional quantum error correcting codes are based on the so-called “stabilizer” formalism, and many commonly used codes correspond to physical theories such as discrete gauge theories.  I’ll talk about a new kind of code, called a Floquet code, that offers potentially improved performance for certain kinds of hardware and that has an interesting physical interpretation, implementing a duality of the discrete gauge theory.  This will be an introductory talk, explaining basic ideas of quantum error correction before discussing the new codes.\n
