First impressions of lattice gauge theory on a quantum annealer

Randy Lewis, York University

There are strong motivations for using gate-based quantum computers to study quantum field theories, but what about quantum annealers? I will review our experiences of implementing SU(2) gauge theory on a D-Wave quantum annealer. This includes eigenvalues, eigenvectors, expectation values, and time evolution, all computed on tiny lattices. Perhaps the pros and cons of these explorations will help to clarify whether quantum annealers might play a valuable role in the future of lattice gauge theories.
